Presenting the Latin American Congress On Fats And Oils

Integrating knowledge to create value.

Our motto "Integrating knowledge to create value", expresses our wish to pursue excellence in the fats & oils sector in Latin America through the exchange of knowledge.

During the event, researchers from all over the world will share their technical and scientific knowledge and present their new findings on aspects related to the oilseed sector.

Behind the idea of "Integrating knowledge to create value" underlies the message that information and experiences from different countries, regions and workplaces can be shared and discussed. We need to present ourselves as Latin Americans, guided by professionalism and passion, eager to achieve sustainable value for the benefit of our people.

As in 1992 and 2005, ASAGA is proud to host, once again, the Latin American Congress On Fats And Oils, to be held in Rosario, November 1-6, 2009. ASAGA -the Argentine Fats & Oils Association- represents institutions and stakeholders in the fats and edible oil industry.

Since its creation in 1989, the Association has steadily improved and expanded its technical training programs for the edible oil industry. With a sound knowledge of the business and a history of successful meetings, ASAGA is able to organize a congress that includes high-level technical sessions, a trade show where suppliers from all over the world will be exhibiting their latest technology, social activities, plant tours, and technical and business presentations, providing a unique opportunity to contact key players not only from Argentina, but also from Latin America and the rest of the world.

PROGRAM

· Short Courses

· November 1 and 2
· 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
· Complejo Metropolitano

Depending on the module, the courses will include one or two-day intensive sessions on specific topics and will be delivered by world-class professionals, who will have direct contact with the participants. Course attendance is limited.

Modules

REFINING
Natural fats and oils are modified and refined through processes that improve their functional and organoleptic properties, extending their shelf-life and thus adding value to them.
As a result of the growing concern for healthy food, modification and refining methods have changed, in particular to reduce trans fat content.
This course includes an extensive description of the various refining and modification processes currently available in the industry.

LECITHINS
The course will cover theoretical and practical aspects regarding production, physico-chemical properties, functionality as well as food and non-food applications of lecithins from different sources.
Given the various applications of lecithin in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, the course will refer to the new research findings and the development of lecithin as a multifunctional additive.
This course will certainly be of interest to professionals in the edible oil industry, industrial users of fats and oils (manufacturers of margarine, sauce, mayonnaise, dairy products, ice-cream, bakery products, chocolate), the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries (creams, emulsions and liposomes), as well as university professionals and students.

CRUSHING
Crushing is the first step in the process of converting oilseeds into vegetable oil and protein meal.
The area around Rosario concentrates the highest crushing capacity in the world, and is therefore an ideal location for this course. The specific background of speakers and the possibility to visit local processing plants and port terminals add value to the course.
With the participation of renowned international experts, the sessions will provide information about the technology and management techniques used in plants, focusing on topics such as energy savings, improvement of operational costs, optimization of extraction processes and new applications, raw material preparation, fat extraction, conditioning of the extracted meal, and industrial processes and operations.

LIPID OXIDATION ;
Spontaneous oxidation of lipids during storage is a natural phenomenon that causes deterioration and must therefore be minimized with appropriate management.
This course is intended to update participants on different aspects related to lipid oxidation. Professionals in the edible oil industry and in industries that use fats and oils as well as university professionals and students will receive a new perspective on the mechanisms of lipid oxidation and its inhibition by means of antioxidants for the production of healthy food products.

APPLICATION OF EDIBLE FATS AND OILS
This course will focus on the different applications of fats and oils in the food industry, including consideration of functional aspects and consumer acceptance.
It is designed for professionals related to the food industry: technologists, engineers, chemists, biochemists, university lecturers, researchers and advanced students.

PROTEIN MEAL AND ANIMAL NUTRITION
Leaving behind the old idea of product and byproduct, the concept today is that oilseed crushing provides two different products of equal importance: oil and meal.
Because of their high protein content, meals are basically used for animal nutrition, and their biochemical and physiological behaviour in the different animal species will depend on their composition.
The course will focus on the different types of meals depending on their aminoacid content and other attributes, and their application for different animal species.
It includes identification of undesirable substances in meal, as stated in the European Union guidelines, and the use of tools for the correct management of these substances in the various phases of the industrial and commercial process.

BIOFUELS
Topics covered in this course are production, storage, technological quality and standards for biofuels coming from fats and oils.

QUALITY CONTROL AND ANALITYCS
Today, the notion of “Quality” is rapidly being integrated into all human activities, thus creating a socio-economic environment where “Quality Management Systems” become real “restrictions” on such activities. Laboratories today are service providers that use analytical techniques and innovative equipment (NIR, GC, HPLC, ICP, PCR, Elisa, etc ) to control quality and safety issues in production processes.
They must provide reliable results (in due time and form) that will help establish the economic value of products. Reliability is assured through the implementation of the ISO 17025 Standard.

Argentina the best destination in the world

Argentina is a unique tourist destination with diverse natural landscapes, typical food and local traditions in each of its regions. Its vast territory extends from the Andes to the west, across large rivers to the wide beaches and cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean to the east; from the rainforest to the north down to its valleys, glaciers, lakes and cold forests in Patagonia, the gateway to the Antarctic. In 2006, Lonely Planet ranked Argentina the best and safest destination in the world.

Besides Buenos Aires, the capital city, sometimes referred to as the "Paris of South America" for its architecture and cultural activity, Argentina offers countless options for tourists.

Tourist attractions include the Iguazú Falls,-UNESCO Mankind Heritage- in the northwest subtropical jungle, with an excellent infrastructure and a diversity of tours. The Iguazú National Park preserves not only the falls but the original tropical flora and fauna. Among its many waterfalls, the "Devil's Throat" is the most impressive.

The huge Perito Moreno Glacier, also Mankind Heritage, may be easily approached from land, and is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not receeding. Part of Campo de Hielo Sur (South Ice Fields), it divides the Lago Argentino lake into two, and periodically breaks up to offer one of the
most amazing spectacles of nature ever, against the magnificent backdrop of steep mountains and large lakes.

Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world, in Tierra del Fuego, offers interesting tourist attractions including day trips, gastronomy and the feeling of being literally at the end of the world. Especially in autumn, when tree leaves turn red, and a sense of magic pervades.

Rosario

Rosario is the center of the second most populated urban area in Argentina, after Buenos Aires. The oilseed industry has been a key driver of growth in the late 19th Century. This is reflected in the stately homes along Oroño Avenue, the wide elegant public parks, the impressive Flag Memorial or the modern bridge over the Paraná River that connects the city to the province of Entre Ríos.

Rosario also has beautiful beaches in the Delta of the Paraná River, where ecotourism combines with intense cultural activities.

The 13th LACFAO is an excellent opportunity to enjoy these outstanding tourist attractions and top-level service.
